OCD Therapy in Virginia

Evidence-based treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), intrusive thoughts, and anxiety. Serving adults and adolescents statewide.

If you're exhausted by distressing thoughts, overwhelming doubt, or rituals that bring temporary relief but keep you feeling stuck in the long run, you're not alone.

OCD doesn't always look the way people expect. Often, it sounds something like:

“I just need to check so I’m 100% sure.”
“I have to rearrange this so it’s ‘just right.’”

“I’ll feel better once I complete this counting ritual.”
“I cannot relax until my friend provides me with reassurance.”
“Maybe if I think about it one more time I'll finally feel certain.”
"I know it probably isn't true, but what if it is?"
"If I can just remember exactly what happened..."
“If I just keep researching, I can find the answers that will make it all better.”
“I can’t watch that movie because it will bring up thoughts I can’t handle.”

“What does it mean that I just had THAT thought?”
“I don’t actually have OCD, I’m just a terrible person.”

A lot of what you’ve heard about OCD is probably inaccurate. OCD can take many forms.

It may involve fears about:

  • harming someone — even though it's the last thing you would ever want to do
  • contamination
  • your health, or the health of a loved one
  • relationships
  • religion or morality (scrupulosity)
  • sexual intrusive thoughts
  • postpartum intrusive thoughts
  • a feeling that isn't "just right"
  • making the “wrong decision”

Whatever form it takes, OCD can be painful, overwhelming, and exhausting - but it is also highly treatable.

Learning to manage OCD can be life-changing. I've had the privilege of seeing clients regain time, freedom, and confidence as they learn new ways of responding to OCD. Real progress is possible, and I'd love to help you get there.

How we get there:

I tailor treatment to each client using evidence-based approaches, including Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) and Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (ICBT).

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is one of the most effective treatments for OCD. Together, we'll gradually practice facing your OCD triggers while resisting the urge to perform compulsions. Over time, you learn that you don't need your compulsions to be okay.

The way I practice ERP prioritizes each individual client's agency and values. I will never make you do anything you're not okay with trying.

I also incorporate Inference-Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (ICBT) when appropriate.

Rather than focusing primarily on facing feared situations, ICBT helps people understand how OCD creates doubt in the first place. Many clients find that ICBT allows them to "see through the illusion" of OCD.  Together, you and I will figure out which approach best meets your needs at this time.
